Every August, I watch the same thing happen.

Students who worked hard all year, who got decent FSc marks, who genuinely wanted to get into a good university, are sitting at home, confused, scrolling through ten different websites that all say different things. One says the NUST deadline is July. Another says August. Someone on a Facebook group says their cousin got in with 65%. Someone else says 65% isn't enough.

Meanwhile, the actual deadline passed four days ago.

I have seen this play out enough times to know the marks are rarely the problem. The information is.

So here's what is actually happening with Fall 2026 admissions at Pakistan's top universities. Not what someone heard. What the official portals actually say right now.

Fall 2026 — What's Open Right Now

Here's the short version of where things stand as of late June 2026.

NUST is the most urgent. The MS Fall 2026 registration deadline was extended to July 5, which is days away. UG admissions already ran their NET series;

if you appeared in any series this year, your best score is already in the system and merit lists come in August.

FAST, COMSATS, and UET fall admissions open in July. You haven't missed them. But you're not early either.

LUMS UG cycle for Fall 2026 already closed in January. The next UG cycle opens in October 2026. Graduate programs are ongoing — check admission.lums.edu.pk.

QAU fall admissions are expected in July 2026.

Classes at most universities start in September or October. Merit lists in August. That's your actual timeline.

One thing I want to say before anything else, because it trips up more students than anything: every single one of these universities uses a different entry test. NUST uses NET. FAST uses its own NU test. COMSATS takes NTS NAT. UET takes ECAT. They are not interchangeable. A student who only appeared in NET cannot apply to FAST on that score. Check which tests you've taken before you start applications.

NUST — The Merit Formula Nobody Explains Properly

Let me start with the thing most students get wrong about NUST.

Everyone talks about getting 85%, 90% in FSc as if that's what gets you in. It helps. But it's not what drives your merit position. The NET score is 75% of your aggregate. Intermediate marks are 15%. Matric is 10%.

Do that math. A student with 180 out of 200 in NET (90%), decent intermediate marks around 82%, and matric around 88% ends up with an aggregate close to 88.6%. That's competitive for SEECS — Computer Science at NUST's main Islamabad campus.

A student with 94% in intermediate but a weak NET score? They often don't make the first merit list for programs they expected to sail into.

This isn't a criticism of NUST's system. It's just what the formula actually is. And preparing for it means taking NET seriously — more seriously than cramming for FSc boards.

For MS students:

The July 5 deadline is real. Apply at pgadmission.nust.edu.pk. NUST also uses GNET for graduate admissions in some programs — check the specific program page, because requirements vary.

Fees run from PKR 100,000 to 140,000 per semester for engineering and CS. Business programs at NUST Business School go up to PKR 260,000. Hostel adds roughly PKR 60,000 per semester.

No negative marking in NET. Attempt every question. Leaving something blank guarantees zero. A guess at least gives you a shot.

LUMS — The Fee Excuse That Needs to Stop

I'll be direct: the single most common reason talented students don't apply to LUMS is that they look at PKR 280,000 to 350,000 per semester and close the tab.

That's understandable. It's also, for many of them, the wrong call.

LUMS has a National Outreach Programme. NOP. It's not a discount. It's not 50% off. It's full tuition plus hostel for students from lower-income families. LUMS built NOP specifically because they wanted students in that PKR 280,000 classroom who couldn't have gotten there any other way.

The Need-Based Financial Aid (NBFA) programme can cover up to 100% of tuition based on family income. These aren't marketing promises they are funded programmes that LUMS has been running for years.

The employment rate for LUMS graduates is 95% within six months. That number matters when you're calculating whether the investment is worth it.

For Fall 2026 undergraduate admissions, the January cycle closed. Next UG cycle opens October 2026. If you're a current student planning for next year, mark that date now. Graduate applications are ongoing.

Entry tests accepted: LCAT (LUMS's own test), SAT above 1300, or ACT. The financial aid application runs parallel to admission — you apply for both at the same time through the portal. Miss the financial aid deadline and you lose that funding even if you're admitted. That's the part nobody warns students about clearly enough.

FAST-NUCES — Where Tech Jobs Actually Come From

Ask software engineers working at Pakistan's top IT companies where they went to university. FAST comes up constantly — more than you'd expect from a university that doesn't dominate the rankings conversation.

The reason is placement. Companies like Systems Limited, Arbisoft, 10Pearls, and several multinationals actively recruit from FAST campuses semester after semester. The alumni network inside Pakistan's software export industry is something no ranking table captures.

Six campuses:

COMSATS — The University People Keep Underrating

I have sat in enough conversations where people dismiss COMSATS because it's not NUST or LUMS.

Those people are usually wrong.

COMSATS is a public-sector university under the Ministry of Science and Technology. Seven campuses. HEC-recognised degree. Consistently ranks among Pakistan's top public universities for computer science and engineering. And the fees? Significantly lower than any private alternative.

Fall 2026 admissions open in July 2026. Everything online through the COMSATS portal.

The entry test is NTS NAT — but register for the right stream or your score won't count. NAT-IE for engineering. NAT-ICS for computing. NAT-ICOM for business. This sounds obvious, but it is one of the most common application mistakes I've seen. Students register for a general NAT session and find out later that it wasn't valid for their program.

Fees at the Islamabad campus run PKR 65,000 to 100,000 per semester. Abbottabad and Sahiwal campuses?

Noticeably cheaper. Same degree. Same recognition. If you're from a city near one of those campuses, there's a strong case for going there over moving to Islamabad for a more expensive experience.

Financial support options are genuinely good. Merit scholarships for strong NAT or FSc results.

Ehsaas Undergraduate Program for need-based students.

Kinship concession if a sibling is already enrolled — something most families don't know to ask about.

HEC and PEEF both accepted. The financial aid office at each campus handles these — go there in person when you arrive and ask directly. Many students qualify for scholarships they never claimed because nobody told them to apply.

UET Lahore — Old Name, Real Value

UET Lahore is Pakistan's oldest engineering university. Founded in 1921. That history carries weight in specific places — government departments, large infrastructure companies, established manufacturing firms — where the UET name is simply trusted in a way that newer institutions haven't built yet.

ECAT only. No alternatives. Register at uet.edu.pk/admissions. Phase 2 deadline expected July 2026 — don't wait.

Fees are among the lowest for engineering in the country. PKR 35,000 to 55,000 per semester. Hostel on campus.

For financial support: HEC Need-Based Scholarships, PEEF for Punjab domicile holders, Ehsaas Undergraduate Scholarship, and the Prime Minister's Laptop Scheme for annual top performers.

If you're from Punjab, your family income qualifies, and you want an engineering degree, UET with PEEF support can make your entire undergraduate education genuinely affordable. That combination exists. Most students from qualifying families don't pursue it because they don't know the full picture.

QAU Islamabad — The Research Option

QAU doesn't show up in most admission guides. It should show up in more.

It's Pakistan's top federal research university. Strong in natural sciences, social sciences, and postgraduate work in ways that most better-marketed universities don't match. Federal university fees — PKR 15,000 to 35,000 per semester for undergraduate programs. MS and PhD are significantly subsidised.

If you want a research career or academic path, and you're not locked into engineering, QAU is worth seriously considering. It doesn't have the corporate placement network of FAST or the brand recognition of LUMS. What it has is research depth and a fee structure that almost no other quality university in Pakistan can touch.

Scholarships That Actually Exist

LUMS NOP — Full tuition plus hostel. Apply through the portal alongside your admission application. The financial aid tab appears after you submit the admission form. Missing this deadline means losing the funding, even with admission. Next cycle opens October 2026.

NUST Need-Based Scholarship — Up to 100% tuition. Apply through the admissions portal. You need a family income certificate, utility bills, and parent CNICs. Runs parallel to the merit process — not a separate application after admission.

HEC Need-Based Scholarships — Available at NUST, COMSATS, UET, QAU, FAST. Apply at hec.gov.pk/scholarships. Families earning under roughly PKR 45,000 per month typically qualify for maximum support. Includes tuition coverage and a monthly stipend.

Which One Should You Pick

Depends entirely on what you're actually trying to achieve — and most students haven't sat with that question clearly enough.

Engineering with research ambitions, and you want the best facilities in the country? NUST. Not even close.

You want to work in Pakistan's software industry within two years of graduating? FAST. The alumni network there does things rankings don't measure.

Fees are genuinely the constraint, and you need to stay close to home? COMSATS or UET — especially if you're from Punjab, where PEEF applies. QAU if you're in Islamabad and want the lowest possible fees at a quality institution.

LUMS if — and this is important — you pursue NOP or need-based aid seriously. Don't decide that LUMS isn't for you based on the full fee number. Decide after you've checked whether you qualify for support.

Business or economics specifically? LUMS or IBA Karachi. Nothing else in Pakistan is close to those fields.

One thing worth saying plainly: a strong CGPA from COMSATS with real projects will outperform a weak CGPA from NUST in most hiring situations. The university name opens doors. What you did there determines what's behind them.

What Costs Students Their Seat Every Single Year

Same mistakes. Different students. Every cycle.

Applying to one or two universities and treating it like a sure thing. Merit cutoffs move by a few points every year based on who applied that cycle. Apply to four or five across two tiers. The application fees — PKR 1,500 to 3,500 each — are genuinely nothing compared to losing a year.

Taking the wrong entry test. NUST NET, FAST NU Test, NTS NAT, ECAT — not interchangeable. Verify before registering. One mistake here can close off an entire university.

Missing the scholarship deadline. At LUMS, NUST, and most universities, financial aid applications run with admission, not after. Miss it, and you lose the funding even with admission. This mistake costs students hundreds of thousands of rupees.

Waiting for FSc results to start anything. Most universities allow provisional applications while results are pending. Waiting costs you two to three months of preparation.

Getting on a merit list and not confirming in time. Five to seven working days — that's the window after a merit list to confirm and pay. Students who wait, hoping to see a second list, sometimes lose both seats. Confirm immediately at your best available offer.

Final Thoughts

My cousin eventually transferred to a better program after his second semester. Fixed CGPA, got to where he wanted. But it cost him a year of stress and confusion that better information would have prevented entirely.
